History of Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born in Dusselfdorf in 1880, a very sickly and frail child who suffered with Asthma and Rickets. He was incredibly determined to overcome his weaknesses and so experimented with various exercise disciplines and selected the most effective methods, the Pilates discipline was born.

As well as training detectives at Scotland Yard at the start of World War One he helped rehabilate wounded war veterans.

In time he and his nurse wife, Clara, set up a studio in New York which attracted top ballet dancers, actors and athletes all anxious to learn from this incredible man.

The Body Control Pilates method has developed from the work of Joseph Pilates and The Body Control Pilates foundation is renowned as being one of the most effective, safe and efficient forms of Pilates and has lead the way in making the work of Joseph Pilates available to every day people.
